Dr Philomena Smith will undertake a three year research project focusing on intellectual disability and health at Ulster University and NUI Galway. The rate of obesity in people with ID is significantly higher than that of the general population and research suggests a multi-pronged, non-traditional approach is necessary to tackle this issue. Dr Smith will work with young adults with ID and examine their current eating and exercise habits to develop a model for self-managing healthy lifestyle choices supported by technology. This project will combine behaviour management, state of the art technology and health psychology to create a model tailored to the needs of the individual to increase effectiveness.
